Kolkata, Dec 11 (IANS) His third film on Feluda, a fictional private detective created by his father Satyajit Ray, titled “Tintorettor Jishu” is set to release Friday and director Sandip Ray says he is as nervous as he was when the first one in the series hit the screen.”Even after filming two Feluda stories - ‘Bombaiyer Bombete’ (2003) and ‘Kailashey Kelenkari’ (2007), I am scared, nervous and having a dry throat before the release of ‘Tintorretor Jishu’ Friday because I know, if there is a slight distortion in the screenplay, Feluda fans will kill me,” Ray told reporters Thursday afternoon.

“Feluda was created by my father in 1965. After that he literally immortalised Feluda through novels and films, so much so that every Indian, especially Bengalis, know the stories by heart,” he added.

On a more serious note, Ray said he introduced some changes in the screenplay, but keeping in mind the sentiments of Feluda fans.

“Time is changing and hence I had to update Feluda a bit. For example, my Feluda is tech savvy, unlike the original character. But keeping in mind the sentiments of his fans, the detective won’t carry any laptop or cell phone.”

Answering the question whether Feluda has quit smoking his favourite Charminar cigarettes in the new film, the director said he couldn’t do that for the sake of Feluda fans.

“Feluda fans are used to seeing and reading Feluda puffing Charminar cigarettes while solving his cases. Hence I went through the censor board rules against the ban and found that we can’t show the name and packet of cigarettes, but puffing on screen is allowed.”

“If Feluda has to quit cigarettes, then popular detective Sherlock Holmes too will have to quit his tobacco pipe,” Ray added.

“Tintorettor Jishu” revolves around a famous painting by Italian artist Tintoretto that gets stolen. Feluda chases the unidentified thieves from West Bengal to Hong Kong and solves the mystery.
