Jaipur, Jan 24 (IANS) Apparently depressed over frequent spats due to financial problems, a 50-year old man and his wife committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze in Rajasthan’s churu district, police said Tuesday.

In an attempt to save the couple, their son also sustained burn injuries. According to the police, the incident took place Monday night in a village near Ratan Nagar town in Churu, some 200 km from Jaipur.

Prabhu Singh and his wife Geeta Kanwar, 48, used to quarrel after both getting drunk, police said.

“Prabhu Singh was unemployed. Both used to consume alcohol together everyday and then have fight. Neighbours said that they had a violent fight before committing suicide also,” a senior police officer told IANS.

Their son, Rajveer Singh, heard his parents’ cries for help soon after he went to sleep in his room on the first floor of their house. “He rushed to the ground floor and saw his father and mother burning in flames in the kitchen,” said the officer.

He added Rajveer pulled his mother out of the kitchen, but by the time he managed to douse the fire, Prabhu Singh and his wife had succumbed to burn injuries.

“In his attempt to save the parents, Rajveer also sustained burn injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Churu where he is undergoing treatment,” said the officer.

Police took statements of the couple’s neighbours and the family members. “Going by the forensic examination, it seems that both committed suicide. We have recovered a charred kerosene can from the kitchen floor which was used in self-immolation,” said the officer.
