Husband of newly elected Bihar village head killed
May 26th, 2011 - 1:34 pm ICT by IANSPatna, May 26 (IANS) The husband of a newly elected woman village head was shot dead by unidentified gunmen Thursday in Bihar’s Begusarai district, say police who suspect political rivalry to be behind the killing.
Anil Singh, husband of Ranju Devi, who was elected mukhiya of Govindpur in the panchayat polls, was shot dead in Suro village of Begusarai, about 125 km from here.
Police suspect the killing may be the result of political rivalry. “We have lodged a case,” a police official said.
Angry over the incident, villagers protested and blocked National Highway-28 and demanded the immediate arrest of people behind the killing.
The Bihar panchayat polls began April 20 and the process will end May 28 by when a total of 262,000 panchayat members will have been elected.
