Husband arrested for murder of Jaipal Reddy’s niece (Lead)
June 22nd, 2011 - 8:25 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, June 22 (IANS) Solving the mystery behind the suspicious death of union Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy’s niece Kiran Reddy, Hyderabad police Wednesday arrested her husband for the murder. A court later sent him to judicial custody for two weeks.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (west zone) Stephen Ravindra told reporters that Chaitanya Reddy has been arrested for killing his 26-year-old wife. The accused also attempted to wipe out the evidence.
The autopsy report and circumstantial evidence established that Chaitanya Reddy killed Kiran on the night of June 17 at their house in Jubliee Hills after they returned from a bachelors’ party hosted by Kiran’s brother Sunil Reddy at a restaurant.
Kiran and Chaitanya, both doctors, had a heated fight after they returned home. Kiran took her husband to task for drinking heavily and misbehaving with the restaurant manager during the party.
As Kiran left to sleep in another room, her husband followed her. The police official said Chaitanya, in a fit of rage, pushed and smothered her and came back to his room.
“The next morning he went to her room, checked her pulse rate and heart beat but she had already died. He wiped out the evidence and asked the family members to ensure that everything looks as if she died a natural death,” the DCP said.
According to police, Chaitanya then staged a drama by calling an ambulance and taking her to Apollo Hospital. Police initially registered a case of death under suspicious
circumstances and sent the body for autopsy to Gandhi Hospital.
However, the next day Kiran’s parents lodged a complaint with the police that Chaitanya murdered their daughter. The police subsequently changed the case to that of murder.
The autopsy done by a team of doctors established that Kiran was smothered to death. She also had a head injury.
Earlier, Chaitanya broke down when police took him into custody. His family members too tried to resist. The accused alleged that police forced him to confess a crime which he has not committed.
Meanwhile, a magistrate sent him to judicial custody for 14 days. Chaitanya told the court that police arrested him on June 18 and tortured him.
Married five years ago, the couple has a four-year-old daughter.
Kiran Reddy was the daughter of Jaipal Reddy’s younger sister Bharati.
