Hospital fire: Kolkatans take out candlelight processions

Kolkata, Dec 11 (IANS) People from all walks of life, including film personalities, Sunday took out a candlelight march to pay tribute to victims of the city’s Advanced Medicare & Research Institute (AMRI) hospital fire tragedy which has so far claimed 92 lives.
Hundreds of men, women and children marched silently holding candles in their hands along the Dhakuria road in the southern part of the city where the hospital is located. The march ended at the Deshapriya Park in Ballygunge.
Bengali actresses Kanchana Maitra and Pallavi Chatterjee walked among the other people to pray for peace for the departed souls. People also carried posters condemning the incident and demanding punishment for the guilty.
The shocking tragedy which has attracted anguish and grief from all quarters also saw politicians coming forward condoling the deaths and consoling the bereaved.
While the West Bengal’s Left Front observed a day of mourning Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists held a candlelight vigil Sunday at the hospital premises in memory of the victims.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would participate in a peace march Monday starting from the M.P. Birla planetarium and culminating at the Gandhi statute in the Maidan area.
Banerjee has also appealed to the people at large to join in the march in memory of the victims.
