‘Hopeful of Viswa-Bharati getting world heritage status’
January 14th, 2011 - 12:47 am ICT by IANSKolkata, Jan 13 (IANS) The central government Thursday said it was hopeful of Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal’s Birbhum district being listed as a Unesco world heritage site.”They (Unesco team) have visited the campus. They have given their comments. They have pointed out at certain strong points and at certain other things…like they have said that there are too many agencies in charge of Visva-Bharati,” union culture secretary Jawhar Sircar said.
“We have immediately set up two coordination committees, one at Viswa-Bharati level and one for total coordination by chief secretary of West Bengal. We have attended to most of their queries. We are hopeful,” Sircar said.
Earlier last year, a Unesco team visited the Visva-Bharati University, founded by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, to assess whether it could be listed as a world heritage site.
