New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS) US special envoy Richard Holbrooke Monday met External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and discussed ways of stabilising Afghanistan ahead of the London conference later this month.
During the discussions with Krishna, the US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan (AfPak) praised India’s role in Afghanistan and explored areas where the US and India can work together in the violence-torn country.
Krishna will represent India at the London conference on Afghanistan set for Jan 28, which is co-hosted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Krishna conveyed to the US special envoy India’s commitment to rebuilding the shattered infrastructure in Afghanistan and discussed new initiatives India will propose at the London conference, official sources said.
India has pledged $1.3 billion for the reconstruction of Afghanistan, making it the largest regional donor to the strife-torn country.
This is the first visit by a senior official of the Obama administration after the US president announced his new AfPak policy of sending additional 30,000 US troops to Afghanistan and a tentative plan to withdraw troops by July 2011.
Holbrooke flew in here on a two-day visit from Islamabad Sunday.
