Shimla, Feb 16 (IANS) A senior professor of the Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agricultural University in Himachal Pradesh’s Palampur town has been suspended for sending lewd messages via mobile phone to his student, university officials said Monday.

“Atul Verma was placed under suspension Sunday on the basis of a preliminary report of a three-member committee constituted by the vice-chancellor following allegations of sexual harassment by a woman student,” Hirday Paul Singh, public relations officer of the university, told IANS on phone.

Verma was the head of the department of agro-forestry and organic agriculture. His wife works in the same department as a lecturer.

Singh said further action would be taken on the basis of the submission of the committee’s final report.

The decision to suspend Verma was taken after a protest was launched by student organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) against vice-chancellor Tej Partap for allegedly shielding the professor.
