Himachal accident toll rises to 15 (Lead)

Shimla, Jan 13 (IANS) The deaths in a road accident in the interiors of Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district has risen to 15, officials here said Friday.

A state roadways bus carrying local passengers from Chopal town to Dharchana village skidded off the road and rolled down the 300-metre deep gorge near Nerwa, some 120 km from here Thursday evening.

Deputy Commissioner Onkar Sharma said the toll rose to 15 as four more people died from their injuries in hospitals Friday.

Most of the victims belonged to Shimla and Sirmaur districts.

Deputy Superintendent of Police N.S. Negi told IANS that some of the injured have been referred to a Chandigarh hospital, while others have been admitted at the zonal hospital in Paonta Sahib in Sirmaur district.

The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, but the government has ordered a magisterial inquiry. The accident spot had recently experienced heavy snowfall.

Governor Urmila Singh and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal have expressed grief over the accident.
