High court upholds 12-year jail term for rapist cop
May 6th, 2011 - 4:37 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, May 6 (IANS) The Bombay High Court Friday upheld a 12-year jail punishment given to former constable Sunil More by a trial court for raping a minor inside a police outpost in south Mumbai in 2005.
Dismissing More’s appeal challenging the trial court’s conviction, a division bench of Justice M.N. Gilani and Justice P.V. Hardas confirmed the sentence.
More raped a 16-year-old college student inside a police outpost on Marine Drive while on duty.
He was dismissed from service and was found guilty of illegal confinement, rape and threatening the victim by a trial court a year later.
The incident created widespread public outrage and several citizens got together to lead a campaign against the policeman.
