High court summons MCD commissioner
October 6th, 2010 - 9:35 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 6 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday summoned the commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to appear before it after officials skipped a meeting convened by Delhi’s chief secretary to discuss water crisis in the capital.
The bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed the commissioner to appear in person Dec 12 and explain the reasons for non-participation of his juniors in last month’s meeting.
It also directed the chief secretary to hold another meeting with other public authorities, including MCD and Delhi Development Authority, Nov 7 to discuss the water shortage in the city.
“You have no coordination with other authorities. Your officials act only on paper, sitting in AC (air-conditioned) chambers. You don’t see the ground reality. Go around the city and see the water woes of the public in different areas including south Delhi,” the bench told the Delhi Jan Board (DJB) counsel.
Earlier, the court directed the chief secretary of Delhi to convene the meeting with DJB, New Delhi Municipal Council, MCD, DDA and Delhi Cantonment to make a comprehensive plan to ensure adequate supply of water in all areas in the city.
The Court was hearing a PIL filed by lawyer Surender Sharma alleging that people staying in Shahadra had been facing a water crisis for months.
