High Court seeks records in Binayak Sen conviction
January 7th, 2011 - 9:45 pm ICT by IANSBilaspur, Jan 7 (IANS) A division bench of the Chhattisgarh High Court Friday sought case records of a trial court that awarded life imprisonment to rights activist Binayak Sen and set Jan 24 to hear his bail plea.”Records of the trial court is called for by the division bench of the high court while admitting criminal appeal against Sen’s conviction,” Sen’s counsel Mahendra Dubey told IANS.
The high court is based in Bilaspur, 110 km from Raipur.
Dubey filed an appeal in the high court Wednesday challenging the Raipur-based district and sessions court order that convicted Sen Dec 24 under various charges included sedition for alleged Maoist links.
Sen’s conviction has been widely condemned.
A doctor by profession, Sen, vice-president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, was awarded by the US-based Global Health Council for his work in global health and human rights in 2008 when he was in a jail.
Upset by the Dec 24 court verdict, Sen’s wife Illina said in New Delhi Jan 3 that she feared for her safety and that of her two daughters.
