Heavy rains lash Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh, June 15 (IANS) Providing residents much-needed relief from the scorching heat, moderate to heavy rainfall lashed various parts of Punjab, Haryana and their joint capital Chandigarh Wednesday.

The Met office says the region may witness the monsoon by June 23.

“These are the pre-monsoon showers and they are due to the western disturbances prevailing in this region,” said a Met official.

“Monsoon is moving towards this part of the country at a good speed and we are expecting it to reach here by June 22-23, he added.

The rainfall lowered the mercury in most parts of the region. Chandigarh recorded a minimum of 22.4 degrees celsius, a good five notches below average.

“We are expecting similar conditions to prevail in the region for the next couple of days. There is a possibility of thunderstorms and dust storms in this region,” the Met official said.

Punjab’s Patiala city recorded a low of 23.8 degrees, three degrees below average. Amritsar and Ludhiana recorded a minimum of 27.8 and 26.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

In Haryana, Ambala, Hisar and Karnal towns recorded a minimum of 22.5, 29.1 and 24.4 degrees Celsius respectively.
