Heavy rains claims 11 lives in Uttar Pradesh

August 20th, 2008 - 5:39 pm ICT by IANS -

Lucknow, Aug 20 (IANS) Heavy rains across large parts of Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours have claimed at least 11 lives, officials said Wednesday.House collapses due to heavy rains caused most of the deaths, officials added.

Officials said the casualties were reported from Faizabad, Ambedkarnagar, Sitapur and Barabanki districts of the state.

The details of the damage caused by the rainfall is still being collected.

The highest death toll has been reported from Faizabad district, where six people died in incidents of house and walls collapse.

“The mishaps occurred in Shahganj, Aadilpur and Radauli villages of Faizabad,” district magistrate of Faizabad Anil Garg told IANS.

“We have already distributed Rs.100,000 to the bereaved families,” he added.

Meanwhile, director, meteorological forecasting, L.C. Ram told IANS that moderate to heavy rains would continue to lash the state.

“Moisture incursion both from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is responsible for the rains. Upper air cyclonic pressure still prevails over east and west Uttar Pradesh.” Ram said.
