Hazare is CNN-IBN Indian of the Year

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) Anna Hazare was honoured with the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2011 award late Friday while West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was feted for her contribution to politics.
Hazare, who has been campaigning for a strong Lokpal bill, also won an award in the public service category, along with members of his team.
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was recognised for “achieving what was once considered unthinkable in West Bengal”. She brought the curtain down on the more than three-decade-old Left Front in West Bengal and became the first woman chief minister of the state in a landslide victory.
Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was awarded in the sports category while Verghese Kurien, the Amul man, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.
The Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) team and Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, the host of the popular quiz show, were awarded for their constructive contribution to entertainment.
Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, Manipur Women Gun Survivors’ Network and shooting champion Ranjan Sodhi were honoured with special achievement awards.
Musician K.J. Yesudas, a devotional melody exponent, was honoured for his outstanding contribution to Indian music while businessman Dilip S. Shanghvi was felicitated for converting distressed assets into business value.
The awards were presented by a panel of celebrities which included journalist Mark Tully, former chief justice of India J.S. Verma and former cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth.
The glittering ceremony was held at the Taj Palace Hotel. The award entered its sixth edition in 2011.
