Hasan Ali suffers stroke, to seek bail: Lawyer
October 30th, 2011 - 10:44 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Oct 30 (IANS) Alleged money launderer and tax evader Hasan Ali Khan suffered a stroke followed by a paralytic attack in jail but was not hospitalised, his lawyer said, adding he will move Supreme Court for bail Monday.
According to advocate I.P. Bagaria, Khan, whose bail was cancelled by the apex court last month, suffered the stroke Thursday but the authorities at Arthur Road Central Jail did not admit him to hospital.
“I am told they have just given him some injection and I have no further idea about his present condition,” Bagaria told IANS.
However, Bagaria said that Monday, he would move the Supreme Court demanding that the 56-year old Khan be admitted to a private hospital for proper medical treatment. He left for New Delhi Sunday to move the plea.
Jail officials declined to speak on the issue despite repeated attempts to contact them, but officials of Sir J.J. Hospital said that Khan is brought there for regular medical check-up.
A patient of high blood pressure and other ailments, Khan had once collapsed in the court room after one of the hearings a few months ago.
Being investigated by multiple agencies for alleged money-laundering and huge funds stashed in foreign banks, Khan was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 17 after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to him by a trial court.
He was granted bail by the Bombay High Court Aug 12, but the apex court cancelled it Sep 30.
Khan is suspected to have stashed away around $8 billion in Swiss bank accounts, transferring cash and assets out of the country through dubious means and evading taxes on income with a suspected liability of over Rs.40,000 crore.
A special court here Oct 1 directed Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik to appoint an officer to investigate if the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) can be slapped on him.
