Haryana announces Rs 2.5 mn for Sushil, Saina

Chandigarh, Aug 20 (IANS) The Haryana government Wednesday announced a cash reward of Rs 2.5 million for Beijing Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Sushil Kumar.The Haryana government announced a similar reward of Rs 2.5 million for badminton player Sania Nehwal who reached the quarterfinals of women’s badminton in the Beijing Olympics.

Sushil got India its second medal, a bronze, in the 66 kg freestyle wrestling event Wednesday. Shooter Abhinav Bindra shot India’s maiden individual Olympic medal last week.

“He has made the country proud,” chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said.

The Hooda government earlier announced a reward of Rs 2.5 million for Bindra as well.

Three boxers from the state, Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar and Vijender Kumar, all of whom reached the quarterfinals in the boxing event were also given a reward of Rs 2.5 million each.
