Dehradun, Jan 9 (IANS) The residents of Dehradun, Uttarakhand’s capital city, were in for a surprise Monday morning when they saw white flakes falling out of the sky.

People thought that the city was receiving snowfall.

But now, the weather department has clarified that it was, in fact, a hailstorm that struck the city around 4:45 a.m. in the morning.

“People have exaggerated the whole thing and hyped the hailstorm to be snow,” Anand Kumar Sharma, director of the meteorological department at Dehradun, told IANS.

The minimum temperature was normal for this time of the season at 6.2 degrees Celsius, he said.

The city has also experienced a similar situation back in 2003.

“There will be heavy rain showers in the city in the next 24 hours whereas the higher regions of Kumaon and Garhwal are expected to have more snowfall in the next 36 hours,” Sharma added.
