Lucknow/Guwahati, July 23 (IANS) The prime accused in the Guwahati molestation case has surrendered to police in Varanasi city, Uttar Pradesh Police said Monday. An Assam Police team will leave for Uttar Pradesh Tuesday to bring him back to the state.

Uttar Pradesh Police officials said Amarjyoti Kalita, who surrendered at the Lanka police station in the city, was not arrested as the crime was not committed within their jurisdiction, but the Guwahati police have been informed.

In Guwahati, a police official said a police team will leave for Varanasi Tuesday to bring back Kalita, the main culprit behind the July 9 GS Road molestation case that triggered outrage across the country.

“We are informed by UP Police about the surrender of Kalita in Varanasi today (Monday). A team of Assam Police will leave for UP tomorrow (Tuesday) to bring him back. It might take few days time as there are some legal formalities had to be completed there,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations) Ranjan Bhuyan, who is leading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate into the case.

Kalita, an employee of Amtron, the IT agency of Assam government, was sacked on July 10 last after his involvement in the July 9 GS road molestation came to light. In the video footage, it was clear that Kalita took lead role and instigated others to stripe the girl.

Assam Police had formed the SIT to investigate the case and the government had asked the CID to supervise the whole investigation.

A total of 17 people involved in the molestation have so far been identified based on video footage of the incident and 14 of the identified were already in police net. A TV journalist, whose role was also alleged in the incident for instigating the crowd to strip the victim girl in public by activist Akhil Gogoi, was arrested by police earlier.

Kalita’s family welcomed the news, while expressing shame over his acts.

“We are very happy that he finally surrendered to police. It was an unfortunate incident for him. He got accidentally involved with the incident. We family members are ashamed for his action,” said his elder brother Rupjyoti Kalita.
