Ahmedabad, Oct 9 (IANS) The Gujarat unit of the Indian Police Service (IPS) Association has supported arrested police officer Sanjiv Bhatt who has accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of complicity in the 2002 communal riots.
He was arrested Sep 30 for allegedly forcing a police constable, K.D. Panth, to sign a false affidavit about his attending a meeting called by Modi soon after the Godhra train burning that sparked the riots.
The suspended police officer’s wife Shweta Bhatt told reporters here that representatives of the association met her and informed about the resolution. They also offered the family help, she added.
Shweta Bhatt said that the resolution mentioned her husband’s action as a “fight for truth”.
Bhatt, who is in judicial custody, earlier filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court pointing to Modi’s involvement in the 2002 Gujarat communal carnage.
His bail application is likely to be heard by a court here Monday.
Sources said the association’s resolution expressed concern over the “shabby treatment” meted out to Bhatt in jail and during the searches at his home.
Director General of Police Chittaranjan Singh confirmed that the association had passed a resolution.
