Gujarat judges to get lessons in child psychology
August 30th, 2010 - 11:23 pm ICT by IANSGandhinagar, Aug 30 (IANS) The Gujarat High Court Monday directed its own administration to give lessons in child psychology and law to magistrates who hear cases related to minor delinquents.
Minor delinquents involved in offences are tried under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.
In a matter which is pending since 1993, the court directed the registrar general to report to the chief justice on the administrative side who then will decide within a month about the necessary steps in this regard.
The decision came after a division bench comprising Chief Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice Akil Kureshi observed that none of the juvenile court magistrates in the state were trained on the act and child psychology.
The petition was filed by NGO Lok Adhikar Sangh requesting the court to direct the concerned authorities to take necessary steps to set up enough remand homes in the state for minor delinquents and orphans.
The petitioners also sought directions to the authorities to depute adequate staff and provide equipments to these homes.
The court has posted the matter for further hearing Sep 28.
