Grenades found on road near Punjab village
January 24th, 2010 - 1:28 am ICT by IANSZirakpur (Punjab), Jan 23 (IANS) Two grenades were found lying in the middle of the road near Nabha village in Punjab’s Mohali district late Saturday evening, police said.
District police chief Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told IANS that officials deployed at a police check-post near this town noticed a bag lying in the middle of the road, and on opening it, found the two grenades.
He said forensic experts had reached the spot and were examining the grenades.
Zirakpur town is 10 km from state capital Chandigarh.
A bomb was discovered Monday outside a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bottling plant in a town in Patiala district, around 50 km from Chandigarh, and was defused by the bomb disposal squad of Punjab Armed Police (PAP).
Sources in the Punjab Police said with Republic Day coming up Jan 26, anti-social elements might be planning to plant bombs at public places.
“We cannot ignore this incident. We have also got inputs from our intelligence team that there is a threat of a terrorist attack in Punjab. We are taking this by chance recovery of grenades very seriously,” a senior official of the Punjab Police said.
