Grenades found in Punjab ahead of IPL match
March 23rd, 2010 - 9:48 pm ICT by IANSMohali, March 23 (IANS) Five hand grenades made in Pakistan were recovered from a village in Punjab’s Mohali district Tuesday, a day ahead of an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here, police said.
According to the police, the grenades were seized from Siswan village in Mohali on the basis of inputs they got during the interrogation of a member of terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), who was arrested last week.
This village is around 15 km from the Punjab Cricket association (PCA) stadium in Mohali, which will host a match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals Wednesday evening.
The two teams are currently staying at a hotel in Chandigarh.
“On the basis of the interrogation of BKI terrorist Purshotam Singh alias Pamma, who was arrested last week, we conducted raids and recovered five hand grenades from Siswan village. These grenades were made in Pakistan and have an imprint of P-86 mark on them,” Superintendent of Police (detective) Varinderpal Singh told IANS.
In a joint operation with the Delhi police, police officials in Mohali had Thursday night arrested two BKI terrorists - Purshotam Singh and Daljit Kumar.
“During interrogation they told us that they had plans to conduct blasts at various places in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. So far we have not found any threat to the PCA stadium and we have made foolproof security arrangements there,” Varinderpal Singh said.
The stadium is about 10 km from state capital Chandigarh
In January, police had recovered two grenades on a road leading to the Indian Air Force (IAF) station at Zirakpur in this district.
