Government employee’s house burgled, set ablaze
December 11th, 2009 - 9:00 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS) Less then a fortnight after Delhi Police said they had busted a gang which used to set houses they had burgled on fire, a government employee’s house in south Delhi was set ablaze Friday by robbers, who stole cash and jewellery amounting to Rs.200,000 from it.
The Laxmibai Nagar house of Ramvir Bali, a real estate agent, and his wife Anita, who works in the defence ministry, was set on fire early Friday morning. Bali and his family were out of town since Thursday to attend a marriage function.
The residents on the first floor noticed the fire and telephoned Bali and the police. The family rushed back to Delhi after hearing about the incident.
Police said the house has been gutted. “The family claims that cash and jewellery worth over Rs.200,000 were missing,” a police official said.
A case has been registered at the Sarojini Nagar police station and investigations were on.
Police suspect some members of the gang, still absconding, could be behind the crime.
Delhi Police’s Crime Branch had, last month, arrested five members of the gang which used to set houses they had burgled on fire in a bid to wipe out any evidence such as fingerprints. The five were identified as Sanjay Singh, 26, Ratan Singh, 21, Vishwajeet Biswas, 22, Mahender Singh, 20, and Narender Singh, 48.
The gang, which usually entered a house by cutting the iron grill of a window, mostly the rear window, had targeted houses in Sarojini Nagar, Hauz Khas, R.K. Puram and Kotla Mubarakpur areas of south Delhi.
