Goods destroyed as fire engulfs warehouse
December 4th, 2010 - 3:03 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Dec 4 (IANS) Goods worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed when a big fire broke out in a garments warehouse and spread to other shops in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district Saturday, police said. No casualty was reported.
The fire engulfed the garments warehouse in Shahpur town on the outskirts of Muzaffarnagar district and soon spread to two other garments shops in its vicinity.
“The fire has now been controlled,” Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar told reporters in Muzaffarnagar, some 350 km from Lucknow.
According to police, locals helped the fire-fighting officials in rescuing some of the people who were trapped inside the commercial establishments at the time of the incident.
“No was injured,” police inspector Amar Singh Yadav told reporters.
“The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Still, it appears an electric short circuit in an inverter installed in the warehouse caused the fire,” he added.
