Naik, 40, is being tried for killing 17 women over 15 years and attempting to rape one. He had already been acquitted in half a dozen murder cases for lack of evidence.
District and Sessions Judge Nutan Sardesai Friday sentenced Naik to life imprisonment for murdering Susheela Fatarpekar, 32, a resident of Agacaim on the outskirts of Panaji. The judge also fined him Rs.1.30 lakh.
Fatarpekar was employed as a sweeper in a local company when Naik befriended her and subsequently murdered her in 2007 after stealing her jewellery.
According to the police, Naik had similarly befriended each of his victims before stealing their jewellery and murdering them.
Naik was arrested two years back and during interrogation had confessed to the serial murders.
