Goa church protests poll squad’s raid on priest
February 9th, 2012 - 7:42 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, Feb 9 (IANS) The Goa church has protested a raid by poll officials on a priest in Velim constituency, located 50 km from here, and seizing Rs.6,000 from him.
Joint chief electoral officer N.S. Navti told reporters Wednesday that Rs.6,000 was seized from priest Romano Gonsalves during a raid by the poll flying squad in Velim church following an anonymous tip-off.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) flying squad raid caused “profound humiliation”, besides subjecting parishioners to anguish, hurt and an uncalled for negative publicity, said a statement issued by the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media (DCSCM) Thursday.
“Every citizen has the right to privacy and honour, more so the public institutions for their role in the community they serve. The least that is demanded is a proper enquiry about the call and its source and an effective remedial action so that such undesirable incidents are not repeated,” added the statement.
Meanwhile, the Congress has asked ECI officials to exercise restraint in their actions and not hurt religious sentiments of any community in Goa.
