Allahabad, June 6 (IANS) Over 90 percent of the girls who took the Uttar Pradesh state board’s Class 12 exams passed as compared to 70 percent of the boys, an official said Monday.

“Once again girls took the lead. The pass percentage of girls stood at 90.76, while that of boys was 70.53 percent,” director of Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad Sanjay Mohan told reporters in Allahabad, 200 km from Lucknow.

According to officials, this year over 19 lakh students appeared in the Class 12 exams out of which over 15 lakh passed.

Though no official merit list is released by the Uttar Pradesh board, sources said Gyan Prakash Verma, a student from S.S. Higher Secondary School in Barabanki district topped the exam with 94 percent.

A few years ago, the board officials decided to scrap the merit list, saying it created unhealthy competition among students.

The Class 12 exams were held March 17-21.
