New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) Girls outperformed boys in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 exams this year. However, the overall pass percentage saw a 1.13 percent dip.
The pass percentage for girls was 85.28, compared to 75.90 for boys.

According to CBSE spokesperson Rama Sharma, the overall pass percentage was 79.87 compared to 81 percent last year.

The results, which were uploaded on the board’s website www.cbse.nic.in, were declared for the three zones - Delhi, Guwahati and Allahabad - at 8 a.m. Friday. In Ajmer, Chennai and Panchkula regions, the results were declared Wednesday.

Students in the capital had a mixed reaction after seeing their results.

“I have scored 95 percent and I am very happy and satisfied. I studied towards the end of the year. Now, I want to pursue Economic Honours from St. Stephens college,” said an elated Akanksha Aggarwal, a commerce student of Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram.

Sahil Verma, a science student from Bal Bhavan Public School, Mayur Vihar said: “I scored 74 percent and am not at all happy with my results. I am planning to send my papers for re-evaluation.”

The Chennai region performed the best amongst all six regions of CBSE. The pass percentage in this region was 92.17, followed by Delhi with 84.97 percent. The Guwahati region, with a pass percentage of 69.50, scored the lowest.

The pass percentage for regular students was 81.95 while it was 41.99 percent for those who studied through correspondence.

Students from the autonomous Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) outperformed all other schools across India with a pass percentage of 95.31. Last year, the pass percentage of JNVs was 94.09.

The performance of JNVs was followed by Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) where the overall pass percentage was 91.13, a drop of 0.19 percent from last year.

In government schools, the pass percentage this year was 84.49, an increase of 1.68 percent compared to last year.

Independent schools, popularly known as public schools, have registered a pass percentage of 79.42, a drop of 1.52 percent from last year.

Among others, the central Tibetan schools under the CBSE have registered a pass percentage of 79.25 as against 91.15 percent in 2009.

The pass percentage in private schools has also shown a drop. As compared to their pass percentage of 49.72 last year, this year they registered a drop of 7.73 percent. Their pass percentage this year was 41.99.

According to CBSE, the number of cheating cases in this year’s exams saw a drop with 43 cases as compared to 58 cases reported last year.

This year, 699,129 students - 408,367 boys and 290,762 girls - took the Class 12 board exams in India and abroad.
