Lucknow, July 10 (IANS) Taking strong exception to the groom’s insistence for dowry even as the marriage ceremonies were on, the bride refused to go ahead with the wedding and filed a complaint with the police here. The groom and his father were arrested Thursday. The groom, Rajendra, reached Shripal’s house, in the Banthara police station area on the outskirts of the city Wednesday, along with his relatives and friends to marry his daughter Kanchan.

”According to the complaint, Rajendra’s father, Hiralal, demanded Rs.30,000 from Shripal just before the last rituals of the marriage. Shripal, a daily wage labourer, expressed his inability,” inspector Ravi Srivastava told IANS.

Hiralal threatened Shripal that the marriage would not be held, if the demand was not met, Srivastava said. Irked by the demand for dowry, Kanchan refused to marry Rajendra and directed all the guests to leave her place.

”Later, she filed a written complaint with us, based on which the arrests were made,” Srivastava added.

The duo have been charged under the Dowry Act.
