Girl elopes, father and brother commit suicide
November 26th, 2011 - 10:56 pm ICT by IANSKarnal (Haryana), Nov 26 (IANS) With their daughter eloping with a youth with whom she had a love affair just before her wedding to another, her father and brother in Haryana’s Karnal district Saturday committed suicide.
Karnal district police chief Rakesh Arya said the girl’s father Ram Pal, mother Santosh and brother Sanjay consumed some poisonous substance to end their lives at their house in Sikri village, 30 km from Chandigarh.
While the father and the brother of the girl, Manju, died, the mother was admitted to the government hospital here in a serious condition.
Fellow villagers told the police that the family took the extreme step after the girl eloped with a boy from a lower caste.
The girl was to be married off to another boy early next month, police said.
