New Delhi, May 12 (IANS) The city police Thursday asked Delhiites to get their servants, whether recently hired or otherwise, verified by the police.

“We appeal to the people to do a servant verification, whether your servant is new or old. Servant verification forms are available in police stations as well as on the Delhi Police website free of cost,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhry.

He cited a recent case cracked by the police, where a maid and her husband were arrested for stealing gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs.15 lakh from the house of the maid’s employer.

“Kiran, 26, and Umesh, 36, committed the theft on Tuesday in Sarita Vihar,” said Chaudhary

Police said that Aman Dewan, a resident of Sarita Vihar in south Delhi, had hired Kiran recently.

Dewan had not got his maid’s police verification done.

“We formed a special team and after local enquiry, we found that she hails from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh. The team was sent to Anand Vihar bus terminal and other possible hideouts,” said Chaudhary.

The couple was arrested from Sarita Vihar Wednesday.

Last month, a toddler was kidnapped from south Delhi by a gang of five people, including the housemaid, who too was not verified.

“The verification helps us to swiftly arrest the servants who have committed thefts or other crimes,” Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
