Georgian forces have quit South Ossetia capital: Russia

August 10th, 2008 - 6:15 pm ICT by IANS -

DPA
Moscow, Aug 10 (DPA) Georgian forces have completely withdrawn from the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali, the Russian military confirmed Sunday. At a press conference, a representative from the Russian military general staff said that Russian forces now controlled most of the city.

The Russian military thereby confirmed earlier accounts by Georgia that its forces had withdrawn from Tskhinvali. But Tbilisi denied that its forces had completely pulled out of South Ossetia.

The ground fighting between Russian and Georgian forces had been the fiercest at Tskhinvali, in infantry battles throughout the night as Russian forces engaged Georgian troops holding heights overlooking the town.
