Gender discrimination in Pakistan state units: Study
August 29th, 2011 - 5:20 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Aug 29 (IANS) There is gender discrimination in Pakistan’s public sector organisations, a study has revealed.
A Planning Commission study shows that none of the ministries was earmarking 10 percent of the jobs for women as mandated by the Constitution.
“It is concluded that there exists gender discrimination in public sector organisations. None of the ministries has female employees as per quota decided by (the) government,” said the study.
Dawn quoted the study as saying it was rare for women working in the public sector to get promotions on time.
It, however, added that the women themselves were partly responsible for it as they generally did not get their ACRs (annual confidential reports) completed in time.
The report said that people might deny it “but the fact is that gender discrimination against women still exists”.
Calling for a change in the male mindset, it gave the example of a senior official who said: “Yes, all this work for women empowerment is fine, but still I will say that the best place for women is at home and not outside home.”
The report said most girls were not allowed to work with males. Also, parents and husbands still felt that among all professions, teaching, nursing and medicine were better for women.
