Gaurav Gupta wins international designer award
October 25th, 2011 - 7:57 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Designer Gaurav Jai Gupta has won the award for the Most Commercial Collection at the International Apparel Federation (IAF) designer awards.
“I am humbled and honoured to have won such a prestigious international award for my country. It’s a proud and important moment,” the designer, of the label Akaaro, said in a statement.
Gupta, a member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), received the award for his spring/summer 2012 collection at a ceremony at the Grand Velas Resort, Mexico Oct 15.
“I would like to thank the Clothing Manufactures Association of India (CMAI) for the nomination and Mr.Sunil Sethi and FDCI for providing all the youngsters like me such a fantastic platform to showcase our work because of which we are able to get opportunities like these,” he added.
Gupta’s spring/summer collection tilted Babel was based on a movie by Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez I?arritu.
“The collection looks at contradictions and connections in this tough global climate and is made with handwoven silks,cottons and stainless steel.The color palette is fresh with pale blues,mustard yellows and peaches,” Gupta told IANS.
IAF Designer Awards invites designers from all over the globe to participate in the contest.
Gupta was the official nomination from India and competed with designers from countries like Greece, Colombia, Taiwan and Australia.
“Gaurav has made the Indian fashion fraternity proud. We are delighted that this award has recognised Gaurav’s experiments with handloom and his dedication to hand woven sustainable fashion. On behalf of FDCI, I take immense pride in congratulating the designer for his success which he most earnestly deserves,” said Sethi, president of the FDCI.
In the past, designer like Rahul Mishra won the award for the best use of fabric in 2008 and Pankaj and Nidhi won the most creative collection trophy last year.
