Gangster gunned down in Mumbai shootout

Mumbai, March 10 (IANS) Mumbai Police gunned down a most wanted and notorious gangster, Firoz Shaikh, in a gun battle here Monday evening. Shaikh alias Totla was killed in a gunfight with the anti-extortion cell of the Mumbai police near the Airoli bridge in Mulund, central eastern suburb Mumbai, said Joint Commissioner (Crime Branch) Rakesh Maria.

“Following a tip-off that Shaikh was expected in the area, the police laid a trap. They asked him to surrender, but he opened fire. The police retaliated and he sustained bullet injuries,” Maria said.

Shaikh was rushed to a hospital in Mulund where he was declared brought dead.

He worked with gangster Fazloo Rehman but later separated and started his own gang.

Shaikh was wanted in at least 11 cases of assault and extortion all over Mumbai and was also involved in the recent firing at a watchman of the Shiv Sagar hotel in south Mumbai.
