Gang of credit card cheats busted
January 28th, 2011 - 1:00 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) A gang allegedly involved in duping people by using cloned credit and debit cards of different international banks and data of international customers has been busted with the arrest of two people, police said Thursday. According to police, the accused used these forged cards at various outlets of Delhi and NCR. Police have recovered 87 cloned credit and debits cards of various banks, two magnetic script reader machines, one specially designed machine used to prepare cloned cards, fake stamps and data of credit cards from their possession.
The two arrested have been identified as Dharmesh and Rashid Sheikh, both 24 years old and residents of Nara Sopara in Mumbai. “This gang has used data of international customers only,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal.
The two were apprehended on a complaint filed by Ajay Yadav, a manager of Axis Bank branch in Saket area of south Delhi, about cheating committed by some unidentified people with the help of cloned credit and debit cards in the names of various customers of the bank.
“The bank official said that all the cards were of their international customers who also operated in India,” said Dhaliwal.
During investigation, it was established that members of the gang involved in these incidents were presently residing in Gurgaon. Their hideouts were traced and raids were conducted but they had fled after getting inkling about police complaint by the bank officials.
Following a tip-off, the two were however arrested from MGF Mall in Saket Tuesday where they were planning to purchase goods by using cloned cards.
During interrogation, both told police that they hatched a plan to prepare clone of credit cards and debit cards to earn quick and easy money. “They are experts in data hacking and as such they decided to hack the data of foreigner customers only because they rarely file a complaint in India,” said Dhaliwal, adding they also prepared their fake Photo IDs to avoid suspicion.
The duo used to purchase gold ornaments, laptops, expensive mobile phones, branded clothes, perfumes and other electronic and household items from the malls and shops and sell them in the grey market.
