Gambia varsity approaches Panjab University for teaching help
August 26th, 2009 - 10:49 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chandigarh, Aug 26 (IANS) A delegation from a West African university met the officials of the Panjab University (PU) here Wednesday with a proposal to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
A high-level delegation from the University of the Gambia, the Republic of Gambia, met Vice-Chancellor R.C. Sobti, deans and other senators of the Panjab University Wednesday.
The delegation was headed by Abdoulie M. Sallah, secretary general and head of civil services, Republic of Gambia.
The delegates called for collaboration and help in the areas of teaching, research and administration of their varsity, which was established in 1999.
Muhammadou MO Kah, the vice-chancellor of the University of the Gambia, said: “There is an urgent need for across the board help, starting from quality faculty members, both on sabbatical and permanent terms and student exchange programs, particularly for post-graduate and doctoral degrees.”
“MoU with Panjab University will help us in the sharing of knowledge data bases; setting up of laboratories and administrative frameworks for our faculties on the lines of this varsity,” he added.
Another delegate, Mamadou Tangara, president of the University of the Gambia said: “We do not want to compromise on our academic standards, and that is why we have come to the Panjab University.”
Appreciating the sentiments of the delegates, Sobti said: “It is every country’s social responsibility to spread and share knowledge and we are already doing this by signing MOUs with the universities of various developing countries.”
However, he maintained that the final decision about the signing of MOU would be taken only after the recommendations of the committee especially set up for the purpose.
