Friends quizzed over Delhi student’s murder (Lead)
May 7th, 2011 - 11:25 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 7 (IANS) Friends of a 20-year-old student, who was found stabbed and lying in a pool of blood near his south Delhi home Thursday night, are being questioned for leads to his murder, police said Saturday.
“We are questioning the victim’s friends. He was with five of his friends till 9 p.m. Thursday night at the DLF Promenade mall,” said a police officer.
Shobhit Modi, a second year Information Technology student at Manav Rachna University in Faridabad and an alumnus of Delhi Public School in R.K. Puram, was stabbed near C-block in Vasant Kunj close to his house around 10 p.m. Thursday.
Delhi Police said that one friend of Shobhit, living in neighbourhood, was also questioned. “He has give some leads and we are working on it, however, we can’t disclose it,” said the officer.
While police are silent over the issue citing that they are investigating, a special staff who are part of the probe team claimed that the killers will be nabbed in a day or two.
Police said that after analysis of the victim’s phone records it was found that Shobhit was in constant touch with at least four female students on Thursday.
The police said that Shobhit left his house at 4.30 p.m. in an Alto car with a driver.
“They reached the DLF Promenade mall where he met his five friends, including a girl. Around 6.30 p.m., he went home to collect his wallet and returned to the mall. He sent his driver away, saying he would call if he needed him,” said the officer.
Shobhit was at DLF Promenade with his friends till 9 p.m. The closed-circuit television footages from the mall showed him with the girl around 9 p.m., after which Shobhit called his mother to inform her that he was coming home in 20 minutes, the officer said.
Shobhit was found stumbling towards gate number three of C-5 Vasant Kunj by the guard around 9.50 p.m. Thursday. When he slumped on the car barrier and did not move, a security guard first thought the youth was drunk.
“It was raining and there was no power there. Shobhit’s i-phone rang and the guard picked it,” the official said. The guard informed the caller, a girl, about Shobhit lying at the gate. She then informed Shobhit’s parents.
He had four stab wounds, one on the chest, one in the abdomen and two in the back. When his father rushed him to a hsopital, doctors pronounced him dead.
Shobhit’s father Suraj Modi is a general manager with the Mines and Minerals Trading Corporation (MMTC).
