Fresh snowfall closes Srinagar-Jammu highway
April 5th, 2011 - 2:27 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, April 5 (IANS) The strategic Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed for vehicular traffic Tuesday morning as heavy snowfall started in the Bannihal Tunnel sector of the over 300-km road.
“It is snowing heavily in the Bannihal Tunnel sector of the road. The road conditions are slippery,” G.M. Wadoo, traffic Superintendent of Police (Rural), told IANS.
“We have stopped vehicular movement on the highway for safety of the passengers. All the vehicles en route the highway are parked at safe places,” he said.
The weather office has forecast rain and snow at many places in the Kashmir Valley till Wednesday noon.
Reports reaching here from the Gulmarg hill station said it had started snowing there since morning and fresh snow had already accumulated on the ground.
The maximum temperature in Srinagar Tuesday was 10.4 degrees Celsius which is seven degrees below average while the minimum was 3.6 degrees which is two degrees below average, said an official of the local weather office here.
“The minimum temperature in Gulmarg dropped to minus 5.2 degrees,” he said.
“Light to moderate rain and snow is expected at many places across the Valley,” he added.
