Freedom fighters who are alive, to get Scroll of honour (Lead, Superseding earlier story)

- New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS) In a special gesture to freedom fighters who are alive, the government Friday announced distribution of “samman patras” (scroll of honour) in recognition of their contribution.Announcing the cabinet decision, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said it was decided during the meeting that the living freedom fighters, who are in receipt of Central Samman Pension, will be distributed the “samman patras”.
“The nation owes an immense debt of gratitude to freedom fighters whose sacrifices sustained India’s freedom struggle and secured its independence. While these cannot be materially compensated, a special gesture of recognition is a fitting tribute to the freedom fighters,” he said.
