Free education for handicapped in Kendriya Vidyalayas

October 15th, 2009 - 8:59 pm ICT by IANS Tell a Friend -

New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS) The central government Thursday announced that handicapped students will get free education in the state-run Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country.
The exemption comes into effect from the beginning of October, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal announced here after a meeting of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

The decision will immediately benefit over 2,500 students.

“This decision has been taken as a positive incentive, and as part of the government’s policy towards greater encouragement and mainstreaming of differently abled children. At least 2,500 odd students are expected to benefit from this move,” the HRD ministry said in a statement.

There are 981 Kendriya Vidyalayas across India where over one million students are enrolled in both secondary and senior secondary levels.

Since inception, these government-run schools have done exceptionally well in comparison to other government schools and majority of private schools.
