Four teachers killed in jeep crash near Chandigarh

Panchkula, April 3 (IANS) Four school teachers, all women, were killed and 14 others were injured Thursday when an over-loaded jeep collided with a mini-truck near the Sikh shrine of Nadha Sahib here. The four killed include the principal of a government school in Panchkula district, Mukta Sharma. The other three women teachers worked in government schools in nearby areas in Haryana.

The accident occurred near the Nadha Sahib Gurudwara Thursday morning as the over-loaded jeep, which was being illegally plied as a taxi, was going towards Barwala town on the Chandigarh-Naraingarh road.

The seriously injured were rushed to the Post-graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) at Chandigarh while others were referred to the civil hospital here.

Eyewitnesses said both vehicles were speeding when the accident took place, 15 km from Chandigarh.
