Lucknow, April 12 (IANS) At least four policemen were critically injured after a mob in Ambedkarnagar district attacked them for taking four people in custody in connection with a group clash, officials said Tuesday.

Armed with wooden sticks and iron rods, locals in Benipur village late Monday assaulted a police party for detaining four youths involved in the group clash that took place earlier in the day.

Angry villagers, including women, also damaged the police vehicle and even tried to set it afire.

“All the four policemen, including an inspector, who received multiple injuries are being treated at a hospital,” Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar told reporters Tuesday in Ambedkarnagar, some 150 km from Lucknow.

“Their condition is now stated to be out of danger,” he added.

“While four people have been named for assaulting the police team, a case has also been registered against 50 odd unidentified people,” he said.

In the wake of the attack on policemen, security in the area has been strengthened.

Police are yet to arrest any villager for attacking the cops.
