Four NGO workers held for duping Bihar farmers, students
March 15th, 2011 - 3:02 pm ICT by IANSPatna, March 15 (IANS) Four workers of non-governmental organisation Muskan were arrested here Tuesday for decamping with over Rs.150 crore that they collected from thousands of farmers and students in Bihar after promising them jobs, police said.
“A police team arrested four people of Muskan following government directions to take action against them in the case,” a police officer said.
The issue snowballed into a major controversy after opposition members created a ruckus in the state assembly Monday, alleging that half a dozen ministers in the Nitish Kumar government were involved in the racket.
Leader of opposition Abdul Bari Siddiqui demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the scam, which he claimed is worth well over Rs.1,000 crore.
Siddiqui said that Muskan, run by a politically connected Patna resident Rudra Dev Pratap, who is now absconding, had collected Rs.150 crore from 4,000 students and farmers for providing them training in cattle rearing and dairy farming and thus get them jobs at panchayat and block levels.
According to Siddiqui, several ministers, including Giriraj Singh, Damodar Rout, Awadesh Narayan Singh, Hari Narayan Singh and ruling Janata Dal (United) chief whip Sharwan Kumar had directly or indirectly extended favour to Muskan.
“These ministers also attended functions organised by Muskan in Patna,” he said.
