Four killed, six injured as bridge collapses in Rajasthan
December 24th, 2009 - 11:25 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kota (Rajasthan), Dec 24 (IANS) Four people were killed and six injured as an under construction bridge on the Kota-Udaipur by-pass road on the Chambal River collapsed in Rajasthan, an official said Thursday.
The district administration said that at least 50 others are feared trapped in the debris.
“We have till now been able to recover four bodies. Chances of more dead under the debris are high,” a district administration official told IANS.
“We have launched relief operations and have sought the army’s help,” the official said. The reason behind the collapse of the 50-metre bridge is being investigated, he said.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened at around 5.45 p.m.
The bridge collapsed suddenly leaving a number of construction workers, around 250 who were working at the site, trapped.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced a compensation of Rs.200,000 to the next of kin of each of those killed, Rs.100,000 to each of the seriously injured and Rs.50,000 to the other injured.
