New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) A clash between two groups of undertrials at the Tis Hazari court complex in north Delhi left four people injured Thursday, police said. Batons and tear gas were used to control the situation.

Police said the incident took place outside the court lock-up when a group of undertrials, brought from Tihar Jail, was attacked by another group which was already present there. Both the groups, armed with blades, had about 15 undertrials each.

“They were armed with sharp blades and it took a lot of effort to control the situation,” said the officer.

A total of 127 undertrials were present in the court complex, including those in the lock-up, at the time of the incident.

“All the injured have been admitted to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital. This is the second incident of clash between undertrials armed with blades at Tis Hazari courts this week,” said a senior police officer.

Taking advantage of a similar clash Monday, an undertrial managed to escape.

After Thursday’s incident, the chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) said: “Hardcore criminals should be produced on different dates so that they do not meet each other and this kind of untoward incident does not take place in future.”

“It is pathetic to hear that the police personal were unable to control the situation. Install metal detectors so that surgical blades could be detected and the same could be stopped from being brought to the court lock-up or taken to jail,” the court said.

“If such incident takes place in future, take strong action against the people involved in blade attack, as per the jail rule. The deputy commissioner of police shall register an FIR (first information report) in this case,” the court said.
