Four held in Delhi for IPL betting

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Four people were arrested for allegedly running a betting racket on the Indian Premier League cricket matches, police said Monday.

Ashok Kumar Batra, 45, Gurtej Singh, 35, Sumit Kumar, 24, and Mukesh Kumar, 37, — all residents of Jahangirpuri in north Delhi — were arrested April 30, said a police official.

“They were caught from a shop in Jahangirpuri betting during the IPL cricket match between Delhi Daredevils and Kochi Tuskers Kerala April 30,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand said.

As many as 14 mobile phones, one LCD TV, a laptop and a data card were recovered from the accused.

“Four mobile phones were used for accepting bets while another phone was used for receiving the rates,” Chand said.

According to Chand, by the time of their arrest they had received bets worth Rs.35 lakh.
