New Delhi, June 14 (IANS) Four people have been arrested for selling spurious and expired medicines, police said Tuesday. Search is on for three more people involved in the racket.

“Two of the four — Krishan Gopal, 42 and Anuj Jain, 32, — were arrested from Jagsonpal Building at Bhagirath Place area in central Delhi. Pawan Gupta, 34, and his father Mahender Gupta, 61, were arrested from Agra in Utter Pradesh. All of them were held last week,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Chand.

Police said that following a tip-off that spurious medicines are being sold at Bhagirath Place, a raid was conducted at a shop and warehouse located at Jagsonpal Buildings along with the drug inspector of the Delhi government.

“Gopal and Jain were arrested and the medicines worth around Rs.8 lakh were seized. We found that a few of the medicines were spurious,” said Chand.

During interrogation, the four told police that they had bought the medicines from Pawan and Piyush Gupta in Agra.

“With the assistance of the drug inspectors and local police in Agra, a raid was conducted at New Medical Agencies in Fountain Chowk, Agra, and at a warehouse on Hakiman Hospital Road,” said Chand.

Police seized 91 types of medicines worth around Rs.32 lakh which included large quantities of expired drugs. “The medicine warehouse had no valid permit or license. The Agra drug department registered a case against Pawan Gupta and his father Mahender Gupta and both were arrested there. Piyush Gupta is still on tne run,” said Chand.

Police also found that the medicines were supplied by Vicky, a resident of Loni in Uttar Pradesh, Anil, a resident of Wazirabad in north Delhi, and Naren, a resident of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

“All three are absconding and efforts are on to apprehend them,” said Chand.
