Agartala, Nov 11 (IANS) Four people, including three women, from Tripura were killed and 20 injured Friday when a bus they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Meghalaya, a minister said.

The accident took place on the Assam-Agartala national highway at Maihatti in Jowai district of eastern Meghalaya when the passenger bus skidded off the road, Tripura Transport Minister Manik Dey told IANS.

The injured, many of who are stated to be critical, were rushed to a nearby government hospital while efforts were on to bring the bodies of the slain passengers to Tripura.

“Tripura chief secretary S.K. Panda talked to his Meghalaya counterpart W.M.S. Pariat on phone and requested him to extend all possible assistance to the injured passengers,” Dey added.

The minister said two senior officials were sent to the accident site, around 80 km east of Meghalaya capital Shillong, to supervise the treatment of the injured people and other support services.

It was reported that the overcrowded private bus skidded off the road due to poor road conditions and fell into the deep ravine.

The 44-Assam-Agartala National Highway, the lifeline of Tripura, passes through southern Assam and Meghalaya.
